Market Report

As the sun blares over the orchards and the markets alike, it's hard to believe summer is dawning and winter is blooming… That’s until I taste, touch, and smell the new season fruits wash past each morning…

I'm thinking this week is going to finito with a mojito…!

There are some beaut new arrivals, starting with new season citrus. Often an unsung hero, the ruby grapefruit, but geeeez these guys are delivering this week. This variety is a Ruby Star, and despite having incredibly thin skin—so you get more bang for your buck—it also has an extremely juicy texture. Less of the grainy texture and more like an orange… Sweeter than other varieties, it’s not to be missed this week, and Farmer Brendo has given us a delightful price, so get on this!

Lemons and limes are in abundance too.

Moving into some other delicious treats, apples and pears are rolling in, and what I love is all of the varieties often missed by the average punter. This week's pears are not to be missed—three of my faves are on…

Nashis—we have both green and golden in. These are grown by a small local old-variety enthusiast who has a couple of trees that bloom on different weeks. The golden nashi this week is actually amazing—it tastes like you made a cinnamon reduction and poured it all over a crunchy, juicy apple that you stole from the Garden of Eden. We only have 284 coming in—he literally has counted the pears—so it's first in for these ones…

Josephine pears—plump, juicy, and often missed in the supermarkets, full of flavour. They are first pick, so leave them next to your bananas for about 3-4 days until they start to turn colour and are slightly soft to touch. Juicy Josey, I like to call her…

Time to Grab a Granny

I rarely say this, but I think the most refreshing apple this week was the Granny… Normally, early seasons are too tart, with tough skin and not set (i.e., not crisp to the core), but these are dynamite—crispy, juicy, and a perfect balance of Granny tartness and sweetness!

Is it a KI-wi too early for the kiwi?

Well, that depends on the budget this week because both green and gold new season Aussie have started. Eating quality is surprisingly good for early-picking fruit; however, prices aren’t moving far enough south if you want a bargain buy…

Are you Avo'in a Good week?

Shepherd avos are on like Donkey Kong! It’s time to crack out the smashed avo, guac, or whatever way you like it—get an avo in you…
