🌱 Spring a Leek — The Tidal Shift of the Seasons

Sep 19, 2025jaeger richmond

Spring has officially sprung - or as we like to say around here, spring a leek 🌱

There’s a moment every year, like a tidal wave, when the produce floor turns as we march towards summer. Last week you couldn’t get your hands on melons… this week? Take your pick. 🍉

Bundaberg capsicums are waving their final flags - grab them while they’re still abundant because within weeks they’ll skyrocket in price before the South Aussie and local crops roll in. Zucchinis and eggplants are in the same boat, so make the most while you can.

And berries… soak up the abundance now, because a strawberry shortage is looming on the horizon 🍓

🥦 This Week’s Best Picks

Veggies:

  • Asparagus

  • Cucumbers

  • Avocados

  • Broccoli

  • Cauliflower

  • Broccolini

  • Iceberg lettuce

  • Chinese cabbage

Fruits:

  • Pineapples

  • Watermelon

  • Mandarins

  • Navels

  • Passionfruit

  • Strawberries

  • Blueberries

🍍 Long Live the Queen — Aussie Rough Leaf Pineapple

Move over Beyoncé… there’s only one true queen this week — the Aussie Rough Leaf Pine 👑

Golden-fleshed, intensely sweet and rich, this heirloom pineapple variety has almost disappeared from supermarket shelves - not because it isn’t delicious (it’s mind-blowingly good), but because its prickly crown made it “inconvenient” for mass retail.

Farmers who once grew over 10,000 tonnes now harvest barely 1,000.

If you see one, don’t walk — run. This is pineapple as nature intended it. Pure gold.

🥔 Potatoes, Onions… and Leeks!

Southern potato and onion crops have wrapped up for the year, and you might notice the spuds aren’t quite as glossy and waxy as usual.

Tip: Go for brushed potatoes in this in-between period, and ditch the humble onion for a leek or two.

Spring a leek, they say… and for good reason. The cool nights and warm days of early spring bring leeks on hard and fast — tender, fragrant, and ready to shine.
